Louisiana Teachers Association

Judy Baker McGehee has been a lifelong resident of Louisiana. Like most of us, she began her piano lessons at an early age. An enterprising six year old, she saved fifty dollars in pennies to buy her first piano.

A dedicated and generous member of her local, she is one of those people who does whatever is asked. She shows up first and leaves last, quietly taking care of whatever needs to be done. She has served in many positions on her local board, including holding office of President for three years. During her presidency, her local was recognize as the MTNA Association of the Year in 2006.

In addition to her local service, she has been on the state board for fourteen years and has worked with nine different LMTA presidents. She has served on the executive board as Secretary, VP Rallies, VP Membership, President-Elect and President of LMTA. Few members has served in so many different positions.

Our recipient received a bachelor's degree in organ performance from Louisiana State University in 1977 where she studied with Dr. Richard Heschke, a renowned organ teacher and performer. An avid LSU sports fan, she delights in donning costumes for home games and regularly brings her grandchildren to watch the tiger band march down the hill. Her most famous, or rather infamous costume, was for the Thanksgiving LSU v. Arkansas game. Each year she would dress as a turkey carrying a sign in classic Chick-fil-a font that says "Eat mor' Pork."

In addition to maintaining a private piano studio for over thirty years, she also taught at Central Private Academy. She guides her students with diligence and care and is always there to see that they achieve their best.

At the age of 12 our recipient began playing for church and has worked as a church musician ever since. For the past twenty-six years she has served as church organist at Broadmoor Presbyterian in Baton Rouge. She has also directed the children's choir and is currently the music director for the church.

Mother of three lovely daughters, our award recipient made sure they all received a proper music education and a love of the arts. They were given piano lessons, flute lessons and marching band experience throughout their school years. Although none of them are professional musicians, all have pursued their love of the arts in their own way. Clara works as an art instructor, Charlotte is an entrepreneur who creates New Orleans' most beautiful and delicious doberge' and Melinda plays flute in her community orchestra.

In recognition of exemplary service to family, students, community, and professional organizations, we are proud to recognize Judy McGehee with the 2015 LMTA Distinguished Service Award.

The LMTA Distinguished Service Award recognizes outstanding service to the organization through initiating, developing and/or administering activities beneficial to the LMTA membership.
